While it's not the best with slamming rock or dance, it offers folk and jazz fans a sweet-natured performance. The Elac Debut Reference DBR62 is a refined speaker with elegant cosmetics and a winning sound. Q Acoustics is a home theater speaker, however, and Spiderman 3 imbues it with plenty of excitement. What can you expect from this small box The answer will push the limits of what is possible from a bookshelf speaker. More importantly, the dialogue and effects were a little harsher sounding. The 3030i didn't blend as well with the rears and there seemed to be a disconnect between the front of the room and the back. Though I manually calibrated the speakers each time, the results weren't quite as magical with the Q Acoustics. In Spider-man 3, as Peter Parker bursts through an office building window, there was a tremendous synergy with the Elac - as the whole room seemed to twinkle with shattered glass. It was the Q that sounded poorest with this track - it's not the most audiophile mix but once the chorus kicked in the sound was actively unpleasantįinally, I turned to home cinema where the Elac slipped comfortably into my Frankenstein home system consisting of a Canton sub, Klipsch Atmos speakers, and SVS rears. It wasn't boring but the song didn't leap at me the way the B&Ws did. With this and other rambunctious tracks the Debut's kept me at a distance. Turning to arena rock, I put on Foals' Mountain at my Gates, and the Debuts finally betrayed their acoustic leanings. But it was the Debut Reference stopped me in my tracks: that over-etched sound was gone, and just the haunting performance remained. With the Q Acoustics on my speaker stands the 3030i made the leading edges of his voice seem processed in a way I hadn't heard before. The Elac Reference came out ahead again with the simple guitar and voice of Ben Harper's Widow of a Living Man. The B&W was the brightest - particularly with the shakers - and its sound quality was somewhere between the Debut and the 3030i, but without the detail retrieval of the former. Some nice cosmetic updates so this speaker now fits nicely in the living space. The Q Acoustics 3030i offered the greatest sense of space in this expansive recording and an excellent sound stage, even if the bottom end was a little flabby sounding. In order not to disturb that clean, modern look, the front is now magnetically attached. The cabinet is made of MDF, nothing new, but is exceptionally well put together. The case is reinforced everywhere to reduce resonances, the weak spot of the previous models. The 2.0 version, still available, looks good but rather ordinary. Dark vinyl and iron bolts gave it a very rudimentary appearance.

The primal version of the Debut was – to put it nicely – rather spartan. Other changes can be seen on the speaker itself. Last but not least is the two-sided curved elongated bass reflex port, at the front this time, which should provide more dynamics in the bass reproduction. And if the previous Debut was already a lot more neutral then this has been further refined in the Reference series. In addition, the crossover has been completely re-examined to obtain an even flatter frequency range. This way resonances have to be kept to a minimum. The mid-driver has also stayed the same but is now mounted in a new aluminium chassis to ensure better interaction with the heavy magnet. Both elements should ensure a better radiating behavior.

The Reference series uses the same tweeter as its predecessor but the waveguide has been changed and there is also a different grille.

Of course this is not real veneer but the vinyl is tastefully done. It is available in two different versions: Walnut with a black front panel and oak motif with a white front. The Elac Debut Reference DBR62 is a relatively large (36x21x27.5cm) two-way monitor consisting of an Aramid Fibre mid-driver developed by Elac and a silk soft dome tweeter. In the year 2020, Elac thought it was high time to bring a better finished Debut 2.0 to the market.

ELAC DEBUT REFERENCE SPECS UPDATE

The primal version of the Debut already got an update a few years ago in the form of the Debut 2.0 which was essentially a completely different speaker than its predecessor. It was the start of a success story for Andrew Jones and Elac and it also meant the start of an explosion of affordable monitor speakers with other brands. When the original Elac Debut made its ‘debut’ in 2015, it caused quite a bit of ‘rumble’ in the world and it didn’t take long before they flew over the, mainly virtual, counter like hot cakes.
